Qorium raises € 2.6 million to expand R&D to scale up its cell cultured collagen based leather technology. Brightlands Venture Partners led the investment round and was joined by an undisclosed reputed international biotech investor.

Qorium is a biotechnology driven company aiming to provide the world with a premium, cell cultured collagen-based leather. Qorium was founded in 2014, by Rutger Ploem, Stef Kranendijk, Mark Post and Maastricht University, and recently realized a proof of concept of cultivated real leather, a true breakthrough. Compared to conventional leather Qorium’s cultivated leather is made by using 99% less water, 66% less energy, without the most polluting first two phases of the tanning process and, importantly, without any methane gas as emitted by the numerous cows responsible for the global 2 billion square meter/year conventional leather market. With the current funding large sheets of cultivated real leather, will be made from just a few living cells from a bovine skin.

Qorium haalt € 2,6 mln op om haar zeer duurzame gekweekte leer technologie verder te ontwikkelen

Qorium haalt € 2,6 miljoen op voor R&D om haar op cell cultured collageen gebaseerde leertechnologie op te schalen. Brightlands Venture Partners leidde de investeringsronde waarin ook een andere gerenommeerde internationale biotech investeerder toetrad.

Qorium is een biotech-onderneming die zich ten doel stelt om een zeer hoge kwaliteit gekweekt leer te produceren gebaseerd op cell cultured collageen. Qorium is in 2014 opgericht door Rutger Ploem, Stef Kranendijk, Mark Post en Maastricht University, en heeft recent een proof of concept gemaakt van gekweekt, echt leer, een ware doorbraak. In vergelijking met traditioneel leer gebruikt Qorium’s gekweekt leer 99% minder water, 66% minder energie en is er geen sprake van methaangas-emissie. Dit in tegenstelling tot de enorme methaangas-emissies uitgestoten door de talrijke runderen die gebruikt worden voor de wereldwijde traditionele leermarkt van 2 miljard m2/jaar. Bovendien wordt met het gekweekte collageen de meest vervuilende fase van het looiproces vermeden.  Met de geworven fondsen zullen uit slechts een paar cellen van een koeienhuid grote vellen echt leer worden gekweekt.

Stef Kranendijk, co-CEO en mede-oprichter van Qorium zegt: “Onze doelstelling is om een snel groeiende markt voor gekweekt leer te ontwikkelen.
