Grassa raises € 2 million for its innovative biorefinery process
Grassa has raised € 2 million in a series A financing round led by Brightlands Venture Partners. Co-investors are LIOF, compound feed company Fransen Gerrits and current shareholders. With the funding, Grassa will further scale up its innovative biorefinery process and commercialize the product output. In addition, the company established a strategic partnership with compound feed company Fransen Gerrits for market introduction of selected products.
Grassa, founded in 2014, has developed a new, efficient biorefinery technology to process grass and vegetable waste. The process results in four products: roughage cattle feed, protein concentrate, fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic) and mineral concentrate. The first three products will be used in animal feed. The fourth product is a plant-based organic fertilizer. All these products are non-GMO, fully natural and from local sources.
The growing world population needs more feed, food and energy. Therefore, it is necessary to eliminate inefficiencies in raw materials usage and closing loops. Grassa aims to play a role in this circular economy by refining grass and vegetable waste streams. By separating components, animals can be fed more precisely and efficiently. As a result, farmers produce more animal protein with less input and with less mineral excess in the manure.
With the funding, Grassa will further scale up its innovative biorefinery process and commercialize the product output. The partnering with compound feed company Fransen Gerrits will support Grassa in the introduction of products into the market of feed for dairy, pigs and rabbits that Fransen Gerrits is active in.

Grassa haalt € 2 miljoen op voor haar innovatieve bioraffinageproces
Grassa heeft € 2 miljoen opgehaald in een serie-A financieringsronde geleid door Brightlands Venture Partners. Co-investeerders zijn LIOF, mengvoederbedrijf Fransen Gerrits en bestaande aandeelhouders. Met deze financiering zal Grassa haar innovatieve bioraffinageproces verder opschalen en haar producten naar de markt brengen. Het bedrijf heeft tevens een strategisch partnerschap opgezet met mengvoederbedrijf Fransen Gerrits voor marktintroductie van een aantal producten.
Grassa, opgericht in 2014, heeft een efficiënte bioraffinagetechnologie ontwikkeld om gras en groentestromen te verwerken. Het proces levert vier producten op: ruwe vezel voor koeien, een eiwitconcentraat, fructooligosacharides (prebiotica) en een mineralenconcentraat. De eerste drie producten zullen worden gebruikt in veevoer. Het vierde product is een plantaardige biologische kunstmestvervanger. Al deze producten zijn GMO-vrij, 100% natuurlijk en van lokale bronnen.
De groeiende wereldbevolking heeft een toenemende behoefte aan voedsel en energie. Het is daarom van belang om inefficiënties in het gebruik van grondstoffen zo veel mogelijk te elimineren en kringlopen te sluiten. Met het raffineren van gras en plantaardige reststromen zal Grassa een serieuze bijdrage gaan leveren aan de circulaire economie. Door het separeren van componenten kunnen dieren veel gerichter en efficiënter worden gevoerd. Als gevolg hiervan produceren boeren meer dierlijk eiwit met minder voer, hetgeen resulteert in een lagere uitstoot van mineralen in de mest.
Met deze financiering zal Grassa haar innovatieve bioraffinageproces verder opschalen en haar producten commercialiseren. Mengvoederbedrijf Fransen Gerrits zal als partner Grassa ondersteunen bij de introductie van haar producten in de markt van veevoer voor koeien, varkens en konijnen, de markt waar Fransen Gerrits actief is.
