Sittard-Geleen, 27 November 2017 – Chemelot Ventures and regional development agency LIOF announce that they will sell their equity stake in Quality Circular Polymers (QCP) to LyondellBasell. LyondellBasell will join forces with SUEZ as a 50/50 partner with SUEZ in QCP, a company with a focus on the production of high-quality circular polymers. The two parties will leverage combined expertise to provide the European plastic industry with virgin-like secondary raw material. This is the first time ever that one of the largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies partners with a leader in the management of resources to contribute to circular economy objectives.
QCP built its state-of-the-art plant at Chemelot (Geleen, Netherlands) in 2014, now producing 25,000 tons near virgin quality polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). QCP was at that time funded by SUEZ, Chemelot Ventures, LIOF and providers of debt and lease.
“As venture capital providers we are satisfied to have contributed to the start and development of QCP in its first years of existence and as such to have further strengthened the development of a prominent polymer recycling cluster”, says Casper Bruens, director of Chemelot Ventures. With an objective of 35,000 tons in 2018, and 50,000 tons per year before 2020, the production capacity of the plant will be unique in Europe. Within the new agreement, LyondellBasell will market QCP materials, as SUEZ will be responsible in feeding of the plant with post-consumer plastic waste. The two partners will benefit from the strategic location of QCP, located in the heart of the Netherlands – Belgium – Germany triangle and close to France.
“For the region this will further strengthen its polymer recycling cluster and the circular economy in Limburg and lead to more jobs”, says Tys van Elk, managing director of LIOF.
The transaction between LyondellBasell and SUEZ is subject to regulatory approval. The two partners are seeking to secure regulatory approval by the end of 2017.

Chemelot Ventures en LIOF verkopen hun belang in QCP aan petrochemiegigant LyondellBasell
Sittard-Geleen, 27 november 2017 – Chemelot Ventures en regionale ontwikkelingsmaatschappij LIOF kondigen aan dat zij hun belang in Quality Circular Polymers (QCP) gaan verkopen aan LyondellBasell. LyondellBasell gaat samenwerken met SUEZ en wordt met de koop van de aandelen een 50/50 partner van SUEZ in QCP, een onderneming die zich richt op de productie van hoogwaardige circulaire kunststoffen. De twee partijen gaan hun expertise samenvoegen om de Europese kunststoffenindustrie te kunnen beleveren met gerecyclede kunststoffen die gelijkwaardig zijn aan oliegebaseerde plastics. Het is voor het eerst dat een grote kunststoffenproducent en een leidende afvalverwerker een joint-venture aangaan om werk te maken van het halen van de doelen van de circulaire economie.
De ultramoderne fabriek van QCP op Chemelot (Geleen) is gebouwd in 2014 en produceert nu 25.000 ton per jaar hoogwaardig polypropeen (PP) en polyetheen (PE). De financiering van de start van QCP geschiedde indertijd door strategische partner SUEZ, durfkapitaalfonds Chemelot Ventures, regionale ontwikkelingsmaatschappij LIOF en door verschaffers van leningen en lease.
“Als durfkapitaalverschaffers zijn we blij dat we hebben kunnen bijdragen aan de start en ontwikkeling van QCP in haar eerste jaren en aan de verdere ontwikkeling van een prominent recyclingcluster”, zegt Casper Bruens, director van Chemelot Ventures. Met een geplande productie van 35.000 ton in 2018 en 50.000 ton per jaar voor 2020, is de omvang van de fabriek uniek in Europa.
In de gemaakte deal zal LyondellBasell de producten van QCP vermarkten en zal SUEZ verantwoordelijk zijn voor het aanleveren van ingezameld plastic huishoudelijk afval. De twee partners zien grote voordelen in de strategische locatie van QCP, middenin de driehoek van Nederland, België en Duitsland en dicht bij Frankrijk.
“Voor de regio zal de deal met LyondellBasell het kunststofrecyclingcluster en de circulaire economie in Limburg verder versterken en zodoende leiden tot meer banen”, zegt Tys van Elk, directeur van LIOF.
De transactie tussen LyondellBasell en SUEZ is onder voorbehoud van wettelijke goedkeuring, die inmiddels is aangevraagd. De twee partners verwachten de wettelijke goedkeuring voor eind 2017.
