Hy2Care BV, an innovative startup company that developed a ground breaking hydrogel technology for cartilage repair, has raised € 3.7 million in funding. The series A round was led by Brightlands Venture Partners and assisted by several co-investors and the Dutch Arthritis Society (ReumaNederland, previously Reumafonds). With the funding, the spin- off of the University of Twente will further commercialize the technology for veterinary use as well as initiate human trials.

Founded in 2014, Hy2Care focuses on the development and commercialization of a new hydrogel device that has shown impressive results in repairing cartilage defects. Previously typified as an ‘injectable plaster’, the hydrogel technology enables a fast repair of acute cartilage defects that often occur as a result of falls, accidents and sports injuries. The procedure promises a great improvement in near-term functionality and pain relief compared to current methods like arthroscopic debridement and microfracturing.
Moreover, the hydrogel can be used during the initial arthroscopic viewing procedure, thereby diminishing the need for secondary surgery and revalidation.

Groundbreaking Research
The unique technology of Hy2Care was developed by prof. Marcel Karperien and his team of the Developmental BioEngineering group at the University of Twente. The latter will remain a shareholder in Hy2Care through its entrepreneurship accelerator, Novel-T. Prof Karperien will continue fulfilling the role of Chief Scientific Officer. “There is a major unmet need for repairing traumatic cartilage defects” says Marcel Karperien. “If not treated well, about 80% of these defects will lead to arthrosis, ultimately causing severe pain and needing very invasive solutions like artificial knee replacements. By coming up with a better early repair, we prevent much discomfort for patients as well as reduce significant healthcare costs”.

Major commitments

ReumaNederland, previously Reumafonds is also an active supporter. They recently presented the Developmental BioEngineering group at the University of Twente with the “Research Center of Excellence” status in the field of arthrosis and intend to continue their support in the upcoming years to enable the technology to be proven clinically and successfully reaching patients.

Expansion of activities
Located at the University Twente Campus in Enschede, Hy2Care will also set up new offices and laboratory facilities within the Brightlands eco-system in the South of Limburg, thus enjoying the extensive network and resources that are available in this hotspot of (bio)polymer synthesis and clinical health. Upon closing of the investment, the company will be joined by Leo Smit, who will lead the company as CEO. He has gained experience in the field of joint repair and biomaterials through the commercial development of high strength fibers for devices that are currently the standard of care in orthopedic tendon and ligament repair. “This is an exciting venture to join, the technology holds the promise of becoming the new ‘Golden Standard’ for cartilage repair. It will be a great opportunity for our team to bring this to patients as soon as possible”.

Hy2Care brengt € 3.7 mln bijeen voor hydrogeltechnologie die kraakbeen repareert

Enschede / Sittard-Geleen, 30-04-2019 – Hy2Care BV, een innovatieve startup met een baanbrekende hydrogeltechnologie voor het repareren van beschadigd kraakbeen, heeft € 3.7 miljoen aan financiering opgehaald. De Serie A-financieringsronde werd aangevoerd door Brightlands Venture Partners, met support van mede-investeerders en ReumaNederland, voorheen Reumafonds. De komende periode gaat de spin-off van de Universiteit Twente haar technologie voor veterinair gebruik vermarkten en starten met klinische testen voor toepassingen op mensen.

Hy2Care richt zich sinds haar oprichting in 2014 op de ontwikkeling en het naar de markt brengen van deze nieuwe technologie, die eerder werd aangeduid als ‘injecteerbare pleister’. Deze toepassing liet al indrukwekkende resultaten zien bij het behandelen van kraakbeendefecten. Een simpele injectie van de hydrogel levert een snel herstel van beschadigingen, die veelvuldig ontstaan bij vallen, ongelukken en sportblessures. De toepassing belooft een sneller herstel van functionaliteit en pijnverlichting ten opzichte van de meest toegepaste technieken als arthroscopisch debridement en microfracturering. Ook kan de methode direct bij een kijkoperatie worden toegepast en is er geen aanvullende revalidatie te verwachten.

Baanbrekend onderzoek
De unieke technologie van Hy2Care is ontwikkeld door prof. Marcel Karperien en zijn team binnen de vakgroep Developmental BioEngineering van de Universiteit Twente. De universiteit is medeaandeelhouder van het bedrijf via haar spin-off versneller en ecosysteembouwer Novel-T. Prof. Karperien blijft ook betrokken als Chief Scientific Officer. “Het goed repareren van traumatische kraakbeendefecten blijkt vaak nog erg lastig,” aldus Marcel Karperien. “Als herstel niet goed plaatsvindt, zal ca. 80% van deze defecten artrose veroorzaken, wat leidt tot forse pijn en uiteindelijk vaak tot een knieprothese. Door de defecten in een vroegtijdig stadium goed te herstellen, hopen we veel ongemak bij patiënten te voorkomen. En uiteraard ook een forse bijdrage te leveren aan het beperken van de zorgkosten”.

Belangrijke steun
Samen met de Key Opinion Leaders vinden wij de resultaten van de eerste preklinische testen veelbelovend – het ziet er naar uit dat Hy2Care goed op weg is om een echte doorbraak te ontwikkelen voor de behandeling van kraakbeendefecten in knieën en andere gewrichten. Vanuit die optiek is dit bedrijf een prachtige toevoeging aan onze portefeuille, waarin wij gericht zoeken naar bedrijven met unieke oplossingen voor de zorg”, aldus Marcel Kloosterman, directeur van Brightlands Venture Partners, leider van de investeringsronde.

ReumaNederland, voorheen Reumafonds is reeds geruime tijd actief supporter van Hy2Care. Onlangs hebben zij de titel “Research Center of Excellence” toegekend aan de vakgroep Developmental BioEngineering van de Universiteit Twente. Om het resultaat ook uiteindelijk ten goede te laten komen aan de patiënt, ondersteunt ReumaNederland dit initiatief ook de komende jaren.

Groei van activiteiten
Naast de vestiging op Kennispark Twente in Enschede breidt Hy2Care haar activiteiten uit met een kantoor en labruimte in Zuid-Limburg. Binnen het Brightlands ecosysteem vindt het bedrijf toegang tot het uitgebreide netwerk en faciliteiten op het gebied van (bio)polymeer synthese en klinische zorg. Bij de totstandkoming van de investering treedt Leo Smit aan als CEO. Hij brengt kennis en ervaring mee op het gebied van biomaterialen voor gewrichtsherstel, opgedaan o.a. bij de ontwikkeling en commercialisatie van supersterke vezels voor orthopedische fixatiemiddelen die nu tot de standaard behoren bij het repareren van gescheurde pezen en ligamenten. “Dit is een spannende onderneming om deel van uit te mogen maken, met een technologie die wellicht de nieuwe “Gouden Standaard” binnen kraakbeen herstel kan gaan worden. Het wordt voor ons team een prachtige uitdaging om dit zo snel mogelijk naar de patiënt te brengen”.
