Brightlands Venture Partners: new name for fund manager of Limburg Ventures, Chemelot Ventures and Brightlands Agrifood Fund

Brightlands Venture Partners will be the new name for the team managing Limburg Ventures, Chemelot Ventures and Brightlands Agrifood Fund. Using the new umbrella name, the team reflects its preparations for a next venture capital fund focused on the Brightlands ecosystem. This new fund in preparation will be managed under the same successful fund management structure. Brightlands Venture Partners consists of seven professionals with a successful track record in venture capital and so-called ecosystem investing. While it is a private initiative, it aims to bring together private and public funding to make venture capital available and help create a thriving Brightlands ecosystem with sustainability and health as its themes.

In 2004, when Limburg Ventures was set up as a fund, the team focused on attracting startups to Chemelot Campus and Maastricht Health Campus. When Chemelot Ventures was set up in 2014 and the scope of investment was broadened, Chemelot Ventures Management BV was established to manage both funds. More recently, in 2017, this management vehicle started the Brightlands Agrifood Fund, with a focus on startup activity on or around Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. The broadened Brightlands-wide scope triggered the name change from Chemelot Ventures Management BV into Brightlands Venture Partners BV, the new umbrella brand.

Limburg Ventures (2004) was originally set up by DSM Nederland and NV LIOF. It made investments in 20 startups – of which it co-founded five. The most recent exit is PharmaCell (sold to Lonza),

Chemelot Ventures (2014) is funded by DSM, LIOF, Rabobank and the Province of Limburg. It is still in its active investment stage, with recent investments in Corporis Medical (medical diagnostics) and Vertoro (biobased chemistry). The fund includes recycling in its focus, with participations in leading companies such as Ioniqa Technologies, Black Bear Carbon and QC Polymers, being the global benchmarks in achieving near virgin quality from smart recycling processes. In 2017, Chemelot Ventures exited its participation in QC Polymers via a sale to Lyondell-Basell, creating a strong Suez-LyondellBasell joint venture. The portfolio also includes a number of innovative medical startups for indications such as chemotherapy, sepsis, aneurysms, dialysis, arthrosis and innovative surgery. The current portfolio totals 14 minority participations.

Brightlands Agrifood Fund (2017) is funded by Rabobank, LIOF, Province of Limburg, Van Herk Ventures, LLTB and a private investor. It also benefits from the Dutch so-called Seedcapitalregeling. In the next years, the fund will invest in approximately 10 startups in the agrifood domain.

Combined, the team of Brightlands Venture Partners are seasoned professionals with a track record in venture capital investing, supporting startups through the hard times and successful exiting participations. The team has a specific edge in using venture capital to help develop an innovation ecosystem and have startups benefit from such ecosystem and in this way increase chances of success and shorten time to market. The team consists of Casper Bruens, Marcel Kloosterman, Kim de Boer, Patrick Claessen, Jeffrey Williams, Vincent van Buul and Ina van Veldhuisen.

Brightlands Venture Partners: nieuwe naam voor fondsbeheerder van Limburg Ventures, Chemelot Ventures en Brightlands Agrifood Fund

Brightlands Venture Partners wordt de nieuwe naam voor het team dat Limburg Ventures, Chemelot Ventures en Brightlands Agrifood Fund beheert. De nieuwe naam past bij de plannen voor een volgend durfkapitaalfonds gericht op het gehele Brightlands-ecosysteem. Dit fonds-in-voorbereiding zal ook door Brightlands Venture Partners worden opgezet en beheerd. Het team bestaat uit zeven professionals met een bewezen staat van dienst op het gebied van risicokapitaal en – zoals dat wel genoemd wordt – ecosysteemfinanciering. Hoewel het om een particulier initiatief gaat, wil het private en publieke middelen bij elkaar brengen om zo meer risicokapitaal beschikbaar te maken voor een bloeiend Brightlands-ecosysteem met duurzaamheid en gezondheid als thema’s.

Toen Limburg Ventures in 2004 als fonds werd opgezet lag de focus op het aantrekken van startups naar Chemelot Campus en Maastricht Health Campus. Met de oprichting van Chemelot Ventures in 2014 werd fondsbeheerder Chemelot Ventures Management BV in het leven geroepen om de beide fondsen te beheren. Meer recent, in 2017, startte deze fondsbeheerder het Brightlands Agrifood Fund, dat zal investeren in startups op of rond de Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. Deze verschuiving naar Brightlands-breed investeren is de aanleiding om de naam Chemelot Ventures Management BV te veranderen in Brightlands Venture Partners BV.

Limburg Ventures (2004) is indertijd opgezet door DSM Nederland en LIOF. Het investeerde in 20 startups, waarvan het er vijf zelf mee oprichtte. De meest recente exit is PharmaCell (verkocht aan Lonza),

Chemelot Ventures (2014) wordt gefinancierd door DSM, LIOF, Rabobank en de Provincie Limburg. Het is nog in de actieve investeringsfase, met recente investeringen in Corporis Medical (medische diagnostiek) en Vertoro (biobased chemie). Het fonds heeft ook recycling in zijn focus, met participaties in toonaangevende bedrijven zoals Ioniqa Technologies, Black Bear Carbon en QC Polymers. Deze bedrijven zijn de wereldwijde voorlopers in het recyclen van afvalstromen op een zodanige manier dat hun producten vrijwel even goed zijn als de oorspronkelijke grondstof. In 2018 verkocht Chemelot Ventures haar aandeel in QC Polymers aan LyondellBasell, waardoor de sterke joint venture Suez-LyondellBasell ontstond. De portfolio omhelst ook een aantal innovatieve medische startups die zich richten op innovaties in chemotherapie, sepsis, aneurysma’s, dialyse, artrose en chirurgie. De huidige portefeuille bestaat uit 14 minderheidsparticipaties.

Brightlands Agrifood Fund (2017) wordt gefinancierd door Rabobank, LIOF, Provincie Limburg, Van Herk Ventures, LLTB en een particuliere investeerder. Het fonds maakt ook gebruik van de Nederlandse zogenaamde Seedcapitalregeling van RVO. In de komende jaren zal het fonds investeren in ongeveer 10 agrofood startups.

Het team van Brightlands Venture Partners bestaat uit doorgewinterde professionals met een bewezen staat van dienst op het gebied van risicokapitaalinvesteringen, het ondersteunen van startups ook als ze het moeilijk hebben en succesvolle exits. Verder heeft het team de nodige ervaring met het inzetten van durfkapitaal om een innovatie-ecosysteem te helpen ontwikkelen en startups te laten profiteren van zo’n ecosysteem zodat hun slaagkans groter wordt en de weg naar de markt korter.
